The Power of Sport

Let’s face it the news is pretty darn depressing these days: war in Ukraine, the Middle East a tinderbox and a terrorist atrocity on the streets of Brussels.

Speaking to the Rust team, the only cheer and positivity  is on the sports desk.

They report on  a late summer/early autumn of fine sport: the Ryder Cup, the Rugby World Cup – with its exceptional games last weekend – and a cricket World Cup.

English players contributed to the Ryder Cup victory but England has not set the world alight in either cricket or rugby.

On Monday I had a business meeting when one present spoke only of the weekend rugby games and not one word on the Israel/Hamas conflict.

Sport brings people together, is  a great leveller as it transcends money, class, nationality and gender. Next year we can look  forward to the Euros in the summer and in 2025 the Ashes “down under”.

Long may this continue  as it’s never been more welcome nor necessary.
