The Premiership

Who would have thought that Sunderland promoted in the play-offs would stand just one point behind Liverpool with a game in hand?

It’s surely Arsenal’s to lose with their magnificent defence and 7 point lead. I still think Manchester City – 9 points behind the Gunners – constitute their greatest danger.

Football tactics are both cyclical and imitative but rarely original. The long throw beloved of Rory Delap of Stoke is back in business with every team employing it. It’s difficult to defend against and the second ball can and does lead to a goal. Many clubs adopt the false nine or just play the one striker à la Manchester City. Partnerships and the fox-in -the-box are as outdated as sweepers and wingers who don’t track back and goalkeepers under 6 foot.
