The silly season continues here …
As another Rust year draws to a close and we contemplate what 2022 might bring, it occurred to me that – as is not unusual in the gap between Christmas and New Year – there is a remarkable lack of worthy media news stories doing the rounds.
As proof of my proposition, here are two currently being featured on the newspaper websites:-
THE BECKHAM FAMILY
For me, the Beckham family are a typical example of a 21st Century celebrity family.
No doubt about it, David Beckham was an outstanding footballer but he was hardly the smartest tool in the box.
He worked hard upon his game and even harder upon his image, constantly changing his look and creating one of the first “family brands” after marrying the Spice Girl – Posh Spice – Victoria Adams, i.e. “the one who couldn’t sing”.
David has since progressed into being a superstar celebrity/personality by ruthlessly and cleverly exploiting his looks, tattoos and what is now called “Brand Beckham”.
Mind you, things haven’t quite always gone smoothly or according to plan. In 2017 he infamously reacted to the news he’d been turned down for a knighthood by complaining that the honours committee were a bunch of “cxxts” and criticising the OBE awarded to singer Katherine Jenkins “…for what? Singing at the rugby, going to see the troops plus taking coke – fxxxing joke!”
Still, all’s well that ends well. We’re now being told that he’s now back on for a knighthood within the next day or two.
Meanwhile all of his kids have been groomed into making good money via Brand Beckham.
Brooklyn, 22, has got engaged “well” to a minor celebrity and – after a start as a embryo celebrity photographer that didn’t ignite, is now forging a career as a celebrity chef, most recently by successfully making a hamburger on a TV show.
Romeo, 19, is a budding footballer at his Dad’s American club team. Cruz, 16, is hoping to become a pop star. And daughter Harper, 10, is presumably also being prepared for life in the public eye.
All that said, the fashion/beauty career of Victoria – launched with a huge fanfare in 2016 – isn’t yet contributing a great deal to the capital assets being amassed by Brand Beckham.
According to it latest accounts, over the past five years it has recorded a cumulative loss of £57.6 million – see here, as reported today upon the website of the – DAILY MAIL
E-SCOOTERS
These ridiculous, decidedly dangerous and entirely anti-social means of getting about continue to attract media interest.
Here are two new stories that appear today upon the website of the Daily Mail:-
Despite being illegal to use on the roads of the United Kingdom, they are being promoted on the Amazon website as being “perfect for commuting”.

Furthermore, apparently, the Government has just recently exempted people who use E-scooters from having to wear safety helmets – you really couldn’t make this sort of thing up!
