The Spanish Open

The Open Espana was won by Rafa Cabrero Bello in a play-off over Arni Arnaus which was bad for me as I backed Arnaus, fortunately each way.

The denouement was most exciting.

Both players were leading the field at -19 at the 18th.

Cabrero hit a wayward drive leaving him with a near impossible approach shot over trees.

The match referee came over and Cabrero Bello was allowed to drop. I never understand why this is not a penalty shot.

There is an old golfing adage that there is more air in a tree than branches and the Spaniard proved this by finishing in a green side bunker.

Arnaus was in the same bunker on his drive.

However he played a weak shot and Cabrera Bello a beautiful chip.

Arnaus did not sink his putt so the hole was halved. Cabrero Bello, now with the momentum, won the play-off hole.

Arnaus is one to watch but this was effectively match play and he was found wanting.

Cabrera Bello’s game faltered after Ryder Cup selection 3 years ago.

It’s a fate that befalls many a European golfer – Victor Dubuisson, Tom Pieters and Nicolas Colsarts – to name but three.
