The Tanner Report/St James Park Newcastle and Basel
For those thousands of Fulham fans who read my column I have some good news after the 3-0 defeat at St James Park for – at another St James Park – 14 years ago Fulham recorded one of their most significant victories in the Europa League without which the better known triumphs over Juventus, Shaktar Donetsk, Wolfsburg and Hamburg would never have happened.
Fulham needed a win over Basel in their St James Park stadium – the most partisan in Switzerland – to qualify for the next round and duly achieved one in Arctic conditions (3-2) and thereby finished second behind Roma to qualify.
The rest – as they say – is history.
