The U S Open

The US Open was won by a relatively unknown Wyndham Clark – holding off the challenge of Rory McIlroy, who once again faltered in his final round and the in-form Scottie Scheffler.

It was held at the prestigious Los Angeles Country Club but only had 4,000 spectators outside sponsors and club members and guests.

This led to a lack of atmosphere. It was however a demanding test with four par 4s over 500 yards.

A further disadvantage for the British viewer was the +8 hours time difference, which meant the tourney finished at 2.30 am.

Personally I got my betting all wrong – thinking that I had backed Cameron Smith each way when in fact I had him outright and failing to back another of the Racing & Football Outlook’s picks Ricky Fowler.

Fowler had a good tournament, well up on the leaderboard till the final round, but has still to win a Major.

Rory McIlroy’s last Major win was in 2014 and he must be wondering if he will win again though he is seldom off the headlines.
