The US PGA
It was not a great Major, though not without its talking points.
In the first round the heavy hitters did not dominate – though Rory McIlroy did so in the press headlines.
The two Ryder Cup captains, Luke Donald and Keegan Bradley, both scored well initially and made the cut and the Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas led after 2 rounds.
Scottie Scheffler and Jon Rahm were pre-eminent on the final day but no one could catch Scottie.
Bryson DeChambeau also had his moments.
Matt Fitzgerald, who has had a miserable last 18 months, recovered his Mojo to finish in the top ten.
What separates the elite from the pack is their mental toughness. The elite make errors but recover, whilst those in the pack can get eaten up and distracted by them.
The other quality that the heavy hitters possess is their versatility.
Thus, if the course is not amenable to length, they can switch to their short game and accurately hit the narrow greens of Quail Hollow with their second shot.
