Thoughts on England 4 Ukraine 0

Let’s not get totally carried away.

England played well against a poor side.

Three of the four goals came from headers when the scorer was unmarked.

Denmark – let alone Spain and especially Italy – are unlikely to concede such  goals.

Once again at a crucial stage in the first half after England had scored Jordan Pickford had to stand up to a striker to block a goal attempt.

Sancho —– Mount

Until Jaden Sancho and Raheem Sterling swapped wings neither was effective.

Mason Mount contributed little beyond one assist and I would much prefer to see Phil Foden in the central midfield role with Jack Grealish coming off the bench as play breaks up so that he can make his forward runs.

Gareth Southgate’s game management was spot on, wisely ensuring that the yellow cards of Phillips and Declan Rice were not increased.

England still have yet to concede a goal.

The spirit in the camp seems strong. England have depth at  full back but Luke Shaw has made the position his own after another immense performance.

Denmark will provide sterner opposition next Wednesday but I predict an Italy v England final.
