Yesterday on TV

Monday night is my quiz night on TV.

Clive Myrie is now presenting Mastermind and Amol Rajan University Challenge.

Both programmes tend to be associated with one presenter – Magnus Magnusson and Bamber Gascoigne respectively – but the two new boys have settled in well.

On one episode of Mastermind the contestant appeared to be in breathing difficulties and Clive Myrie halted the questioning.

Whereas Jeremy Paxman could be sarcastic and never missed an opportunity to display his own knowledge, Rajan is gently encouraging saying “Well done”.

I do not care for the quiz show between the two – Only Connect – the questions are about as bizarre as those answering them and presenter Victoria Coren too pleased with herself.

The Reckoning follows on BBC One at 9-00pm.

It’s a hard watch and this episode concentrated on the relationship between Mrs Thatcher and Jimmy Savile.

Steve Coogan again did well with some sinister facial expressions. Savile outwitted the BBC and ended up with a knighthood, a papal knighthood and the ruination of several young lives.

The difficulty for the viewer is that, with so much bad news already, do you really want to watch this?
