The Tanner Report ; Fulham 1 Newcastle United 4

Sometimes I  wonder what gets into footballer’s heads.  In the seventh minute Chalaboah lunged in his own half at Sam Longstaff studs showing leaving him writhing  in agony.  He was initially yellow carded, then after VAR red carded.  This effectively ended the game as contest and spectacle.  Fulham had to reorganise and were swiftly  two down. But for some fine goalkeeping by Bernd Leno the score would have been double.  Head Coach Marco Silva railed against VAR inconsistency but it was a daft challenge . Newcomers Mwubu and Kawazu  deputising for Tate and Robinson looked out of their depth  and the suspended Joao Pahlinha sorely missed. Alex Mitrovic was taken off injured after 36 minutes but this was probably a precautionary move as he was carrying an injury after playing for Serbia in midweek.   All in all a day to forget and I  felt so sorry for the fans who had to overcome the rail strike to get to the Cottage.

Watching on tv i did not see too much contrition from Chalaboah. I would have made him walk not to the dressing room but past the home end the Hammersmith End to the dug out. His was not the only daft red card  this weekend. Emerson Royale of Spurs having been given the run around by Martinelli made an equally reckless challenge on him in his own half and was promptly redcarded.

About Alan Tanner

After a distinguished military service in the Catering Corps, Alan Tanner did well in mufti with his chamois as a window cleaner. Sadly he had to retire after falling from the fifth floor of Danny Murphy's mock Tudor home. He spends his retirement watching and writing about his beloved Fulham whom he has supported for over 50 years.
