The Tanner Report: Fulham 0 Spurs 1
The story was always going to be Harry Kane beating Jimmy Greaves’ Tottenham goal-scoring record.
It took a knowledgeable friend of mine to point out that Jimmy Greaves scored 124 goals in 157 appearances for Chelsea and – in an unhappy time at AC Milan – 9 in 10 games.
Jimmy Greaves was in my opinion the better poacher passing the ball into the net often a few seconds earlier than the keeper anticipated.
Kane is better in the air and outside the box.
Fulham had several chances in the first 30 minutes, which they dominated, that Jimmy Greaves might have converted but I doubt if he would have scored the goal that Kane did.
Fulham were made to pay for the inability to convert supremacy into goals.
Once Spurs went ahead at the end of the first half they shut out Fulham. No longer did Willian have as much wide space as he wanted and the industrious Joao Pahlinha was more constrained as he had a yellow card.
I made my first visit to the new stand and sat behind Antonio Conte.
He was forever waving his arms histrionically and I wondered for what effect. I did not see any reaction on the pitch which made me conclude that he knew the camera was on him and displays of passion go down well with fans.
My feeling, after a cold and tiring night when the final whistle went at 10-15pm, was Spurs had done a job at Fulham who are still 7th and have certainly punched above their weight all season
