All human life is there … on West Wittering Beach

Last Bank Holiday Monday I travelled to my beach hut with my handyman.

This was with some trepidation as I thought the beach would be rammed.

In fact, because the weather that day was cloudy and not that warm and that most visitors arrive from midday onwards, it was largely deserted.

A Chinese family of three generations numbering at least 20 set up camp – a posh canopy – immediately adjacent.

I would think that this family trip was planned for some time.

There were satellite smaller tents, cooking equipment, radios.

Loud guffaws of laughter emanated from the canopy.

They were clearly enjoying themselves.

I noticed other ethnic families making a day of it.

The posh ones in their beach huts kept away.

As my grandfather came over here from Vityps in what is now Belarus in 1917 to settle successfully as a doctor in the East End of London, I am in no position to criticise immigrants and would not do so anyway as this family seemed respectful , resourceful and united.
