Just in

À la Colthard/The Reading Room Brighton Beach.

One of my mantras is that – not only do you not have to spend a fortune in à restaurant to have a good time – you should not have to.

I was recommended “THE READING ROOM” cafe/restaurant by Polly, Bob Tickler’s p/a,  so recently I tried it out.

It was a 20 minute walk from my home and in the morning the runners were out. To my left was the sea. I found a table on the terrace overlooking it and settled down to read the paper.

The lady next table asked me to keep an eye on her spaniel Stanley, which I did. I ordered granola, fresh orange juice and a flat white. The orange juice was from a packet but served with ice and orange peel, the granola with yoghurt and a blackcurrant compote was wholesome and the waitress helpful.

I went inside to find a bookshelf stacked with books. This was no anodyne Starbucks nor Costa, but à place with personality, identity that wholesome food.

The waitress told me that they stay open till 10.00pm, serving meals and cocktails. The bill came to £18. I wish them luck. they deserve it.
