Delft

To Delft on a trip organised by Alice to pursue her interest in the Golden Age of Dutch art.

We are based in Delft famous for its ceramics, the birthplace of Johannes Vermeer and midway between Rotterdam and The Hague.

We decided against air travel. I cannot  take the crowded airports, the possibility of delay, the aggressive security staff.

Instead we booked on the Eurostar from St Pancras to Rotterdam.

It proved much more relaxed and as we travelled from city centre to city centre – I’m not convinced the plane is much quicker. We had a leisurely meal, plenty of drink and before we knew it we arrived in Rotterdam.

Delft is only 10 kilometres away.

We booked the Best Western Museum Hotel in Delft.

It’s a bit old fashioned with patterned carpets and old accoutrements.

Still, it’s situated by a canal, central and perfect for our needs.

Daffers had researched restaurants and come up with Niven in nearby Rijswijk which has a Michelin star.

I thought the flavours were delicious and the service excellent.

However, as with many such restaurants, they were very big on explaining every dish, its ingredients, preparation and wine pairing.
