Fitness regime (Week Two)
And so, about a fortnight in and probably inevitably, we get to the first real hiccup in my new 2017 personal fitness regime.
Last week for reasons beyond my control I had first to spend 36 hours in the country visiting family and then attend a bit of a blow-out meal where copious amounts of alcohol were consumed. These prevented me taking the regular exercise that I had intended and otherwise would have undertaken. As is in the nature of these things, as a direct result the whole fragile edifice began to unravel and by the weekend just passed I was on a downward slope of sloth and ‘What the hell?’ binge-eating.
This reached its nadir yesterday when – despite my earnest attempt to get a grip with my early morning announcement that I would be spending much of the day at the gym – a combination of the Sunday newspapers, The Andrew Marr Show, the Sunday Politics Show, a bite to eat at lunchtime, a post-prandial snooze, an all-day monsoon outside and the anticipated attractions of watching the Manchester United versus Liverpool football match on Sky Sports from 4.00pm meant that I never left my home again after returning from buying my newspapers at 7.30am.
Having also enjoyed an exquisite monkfish and Parma ham with Savoy cabbage and crushed new potatoes evening meal whilst occupying my armchair in front of the television, I am dismayed and contrite this morning to report that I managed a total of only 4,432 steps yesterday and then weighed in this morning 2 pounds heavier than when I began my new dietary/fitness regime on 5th January!
