Max Schmelling/ The Good German

In the unlikely event that I would be asked to nominate a Great Life on Matthew Parris ‘ show my choice would be the Black  Uhlan Max Schmelling.

In the 1930s thee heavyweight title was a revolving door with Maxie Baer , James J Braddock (. the Cinderella man) jack Sharkey   , joe Louis and Max Schmelling holding  the diadem. Max Schmelling  was the first and  only pug to win the title  whilst being on the canvas -floored by a foul punch by Jack Shatkey . The Black Uhlan still had to wrestle the title from the Brown Bomber joe Louis. he noticed à fatally flaw in the Detroit’s  ‘ s pug  defence . when he jabbed he did did not over his jaw Der Max exploited this and decked him . I knew the father of à journo who watched the rematch  .  His Homburg hat was knocked off hid head and rolled down the aisle. And the time he retrieved it in the first round Joe Louis had won.

But Max Schmelling ‘s fame did not end there Adopted by Hitler as a symbol of Nazi sporting excellenceA proud German he was proud to be a Fallscifmjägeer  one of the 3000 paratroopers who took Crete. Nonetheless  he refused to relinquish his Jew ish manager Joe Jacobs and personally drove  2 Jewish boys the Louvain  Brothets to their safety. . he paid Joe Louis tax and funeral expenses. he opened aftsr the war his own bottling plant and became President of   Pepsi  Cola and died   aged 99

Max Schmfing spent most of his successful and long  life apologising for a  crime  he had not committedp

Truly a great man
