Of Cabbages and Kings
“A pleasant walk, a pleasant talk…
we talked of many things…
of Cabbages and kings.”
The Walrus and the Carpenter
Lewis Carroll.
Every week I have a regular chat with an old friend whom I would classify as a top 30 close friend but not a top ten.
He was at university with me where he achieved a first in law and then began an illustrious career in a leading city firm. On retiring from practice he joined a small deal making investment bank very much as wise counsel.
I cannot recall why we decided to have regular chat on Face Time but we did and I look forward to this enormously.
We talk of many things hence the poetic lines from Lewis Carroll.
Last time he explained to me how to mix a proper Vodka Martini and tales from the riverbank as he is keen fisherman. He bagged three 7lb trout.
In filleting these he cut his finger.
It occurred to me that he was in more danger from a domestic accident than the virus. A surgeon I know told me his most frequent case for treatment in A& E was someone lacerating a hand after trying to cut a tough avocado pear.
He and I do not agree politically but both of us were highly critical of this goverment’s policies, opaque messages and leaving the individual to interpret.
Such an interpretation is made no easier when Dominic Cummings makes a 274 mile car journey when the clear message was at that time to stay at home.
When “ normality” returns I shall miss our chats and who knows we may even continue them.
