On mobiles
On Monday I had lunch with a very old friend now a King’s Counsel.
Conversation turned to mobile phones on which we were in agreement.
My friend had an old model of a mobile which he had no inclination to upgrade.
I mentioned to him the the threat of scammers. No less than three attempts were made to scam me last week alone.
One nearly caught me out. I had mislaid – and therefore stopped – a credit card but the voice message left on my landline referred to transactions unspecified that required checking.
Fortunately I ignored this.
I also had a message purportedly from my brother, but in language he would not use, asking me to call him urgently. This I declined to do.
My friend and I agreed that you are forced into reliance on mobiles without ever being made aware of the risks, nor of one’s personal requirements.
We had a wide ranging chat without any recourse to photos etc. on mobiles. At one point a reporter approached our table from Heart Radio asking for our views “vox pop” on Boris Johnson.
Again we declined to take part, though this subject then filled the next 15 minutes of our conversation.
