Spike Denton RIP

Yesterday I learned on a Fulham WhatsApp group that Spike Denton had passed.

He was a colourful character – the sort of working class intelligent entrepreneur that the 1970s generated.

He was a hairdresser who organised raves, was film critic of LBC and boyfriend of the successful singer Sade.

I would often see him with his toothy smile and blonde surfer’s hair style holding court on the concourse of the Riverside stand.

I guess he not only contributed to the drug culture of the times but possibly participated in it. Anyway he will be missed beyond Fulham.

His soulmate was another self-made journo Robert Elms who supported QPR. I have not seen Spike for 20 years and the sad thing is I never will again.

Our team is going through a bad patch with a draw against Wolves, defeat at Brentford and a thrashing last Sunday by Arsenal.

The moaners are out in force but – on any basis to be in 8th position and still in the Cup – makes for a satisfactory season.

Spike would – I am sure – have approved.

About Alan Tanner

After a distinguished military service in the Catering Corps, Alan Tanner did well in mufti with his chamois as a window cleaner. Sadly he had to retire after falling from the fifth floor of Danny Murphy's mock Tudor home. He spends his retirement watching and writing about his beloved Fulham whom he has supported for over 50 years.
