The Hundred – a blessing for the women’s game.

The Rust has often been critical of The Hundred.

However in his excellent Spectator sport column Roger Alton made the good point how much the woman’s game has benefited from it.

He wrote in this week’s edition:-

It’s the perfect format to engage young girls… their game is more about working the ball, fielding and throwing: intelligent cricket backed by quick thinking. It’s not simply about belting the ball into the next town. Let the men concentrate on test, counties and traditional formats; let the women loose on what is the the biggest opportunity in sport.

The narrow mindedness of the male commentators was illustrated on the radio.

One such asked Isha Gura whom she supported. She replied “London Spirit.

The commentator pointed out they were bottom, to which she replied:

I meant the women’s team …”
