The Tanner Report
Alan Tanner considers the appointment of a technical director
I am underwhelmed by the appointment of Alan Curbishley. The great managers that win trophies and establish a dynasty – Fergie, Mourinho and Wenger – never tolerate such intrusion and invasion of authority. It creates role confusion and political infighting. It simply does not work. Look at Spurs. The Levy business model of head coach and technical director has proved underachieving.
I am not surprised however. Since the forced resignation of board trio of Mark Collins, Michael Cole and Dennis Turner, who understood both football and Fulham, any decision is possible. I’m bracing myself for some expensive disastrous signings a la relegated QPR last season that will disrupt the dressing room even more. The man the fans want involved is Danny Murphy because if you know the traditions of our club we have always have a Fulham man in there. The blessed Roy had Ray Lewington for example.
Some say that this decision smacks of Fergie advising Rene Moulensteen, as Curbishley is a great friend of the ex United boss who doubtlessly wants to get back into football after 5 years on the sidelines. Although much is made of a new zest at the club since Rene Moulensteen took over I prefer points. Since he came as coach we have won precisely one match .
