The Tanner Report: Spurs 1 Fulham 1

It’s a case of “better late than never …”  as normally I post my copy within 24 hours of a match. At least the extra 24 hours has permitted me to watch the highlights of Fulham’s draw and read the press comments.

Fulham came into this match on the back of a 4-1 defeat by Wolves, whilst Spurs had beaten stricken Manchester City by the same score and then drawn at home to Roma in the Europa League. Although the omens were unfavourable, Fulham’s dismal record in London derbies had improved under Marco Silva with victories this season over Brentford and  Crystal Palace.

Spurs are inconsistent and living up to their ‘Spursy’ reputation.

For Fulham, the news was that defensive organiser Joachim Andersen was out with an injury (and facing a red card ban) whilst Andreas had retorted that he had been misquoted in an overseas article that he wanted away.  It’s an unfortunate facet of the international player that they invariable complain of being misquoted in a foreign paper. Andreas is unpopular with the fans and this will not endear him to them.

Coach Marco Silva decided to drop him  for ‘technical  reasons’. He had lost his place as central midfield pivot to the underwhelming Emile Smith-Rowe and was playing a deeper rôle.

Although Fulham dominated and it was only some excellent keeping from Fraser Forster that kept Spurs in the game, it was the home side that took the lead in the second half. Reiss Nelson had not tracked back and this gave Tino Werner the time and space to cross to Brennan Johnson who slotted home.

Tom Cairney came on. He is now on the bench but still the club captain who, in 8 years and 301 games, has assumed legendary status. He is also by all accounts a ‘good bloke’.

So we were  all so pleased that it was his curling drive from the edge of the box with his trusted left foot that deservedly put Fulham back on terms.

Neither he nor Harry Wilson, who has come off the bench to a score 3 goals, give moaning, negative, interviews to the press.
