The Tanner Report: Wigan 1 Fulham 1

At one stage last night if Fulham had scored a second goal we would have overhauled both Brentford and WBA to achieve automatic promotion but were curiously passive so to do.

There was no downside for Fulham but Wigan’s loss meant their relegation unless they can convince a court that the administration decision should be reversed. I am told by people better qualified that this is unlikely as the owner was entitled to put the club in administration.

It was an extraordinary night. I watched the Fulham TV broadcast of the game but had SKY on to see what was happening elsewhere.

I soon learned that the SKY transmission was ahead of Fulham TV and to make matters more confusing the commentary on Fulham TV was not aligned with the picture.

Poor Brentford.

Had they won either of their last two games and not lost them they would have achieved automatic promotion too.

So Fulham play Cardiff in the first of the play-offs.

Home advantage means little so it’s even more of a lottery.  Incredible to think that just over 2 years ago we were all at Wembley for the play-off final against Aston Villa, one of the great days in our history.

We won promotion and went straight back, Aston Villa were promoted the next season but also struggled after a huge outlay on players.
