A la Colthard /Roast, Borough Market
‘Roast’ is in Borough Market.
It is new to me and things got off to a bad start when they had no sign of the reservation which I had booked through TheFork.
I knew I had booked – and indeed had confirmation – so I was less than pleased.
My guest, an actress whom I have known 40 years, was waiting in the bar area.
She calmed me down and everything was sorted. Indeed we were given a secluded corner seat and I later apologised to the greeter.
The food was very good.
My friend ordered oysters me leek and potato soup – which rarely is called vichyssoise these days.
We shared a divine chateaubriand but oddly it was brought to the table with two huge Yorkshire puds and copious roast potatoes but no means of service, nor was there sufficient gravy.
It was delicious.
There was room for two puds to share: a pear crumble and a goats cheese cheesecake.
We pushed the boat out with cocktails beforehand and a Brouilly.
The final bill was £228 for two – expensive but the experience was more than satisfactory and I would return.
Borough Market is next to Southwark Cathedral and across the way from London Bridge station.
The bustling market has an abundance of street food of all kinds.
On a warm spring-like day the crowds flocked to it and Bankside.
Across the river you can see St. Paul’s and the skyscrapers of the City.
You are next to the Shard which has high end restaurants.
All worth visiting.
