About Alan Tanner

After a distinguished military service in the Catering Corps, Alan Tanner did well in mufti with his chamois as a window cleaner. Sadly he had to retire after falling from the fifth floor of Danny Murphy's mock Tudor home. He spends his retirement watching and writing about his beloved Fulham whom he has supported for over 50 years. The Alan Tanner Report is sponsored by Tanner Crystal Clear Ltd, Window Cleaners to the Gentry. More Posts

The Tanner Report

One of my earliest Fulham memories was a fourth round cup tie against Sheffield United in February 1967, almost 46 years ago to the day. The first half was so bad that BBC did not show it on Match of the Day. It ended 1-1 with the Blades winning the replay. In yesterday’s match, the [...]

The Tanner Report

Although I was asked, as a window man, to set out my views on the transfer window, I thought it best to see whom we got in and, as important, whom we shipped out. We did good business: most of us are as pleased to say goodbye to Berbatov and Taarabt as we are sad that Aaron Hughes has left. Aaron [...]

Lets start with three statistics. I like statistics as they don’t lie, contrary to what Disraeli says, or rather they do so less so than the average Premier manager. Fulham have now conceded 50 goals in 23 games; we have the worst goal difference in all 4 divisions; Berbatov and Bent have [...]

The Tanner Report

Fulham made 11 changes with the trip to Swansea this Tuesday very much in mind. It’s always instructive to see our talented Academy kids and to speculate whether and what grade they will mature. Four started, Tankovic, Plumain, Passley and David. The absence of Anglo Saxon names reflects how [...]

Dennis Turner 1946-2014

Every club has a historian and archivist, but not too many like our Dennis Turner who died suddenly yesterday. Now that Mr Al Fayed has retired and Johnny Haynes passed on, Dennis has a credible claim to be Mr Fulham: he edited, and was a programme contributor, for 34 years; he wrote definitive [...]

The Tanner Report

We gave a satisfactory account of ourselves against the league leaders Arsenal yesterday – and a better one than against the bottom club Sunderland last week. The two midfielders Scott Parkeer and Steve Sidwell pressed the Arsenal midfield, but Clint Dempsey is still off the pace. Most [...]

The Tanner Report

Our comfortable victory over a poor Norwich side will have caused some selection problems ahead of Arsenal this Saturday. Some of our so-called key players like Berbatov were rested so that he, Scott Parker and Clint Dempsey were not too fatigued for the Arsenal game. The problem is that this [...]

The Tanner Report

In his programme article the chairman Shahid Khan spoke of how the appointment of Ray Wilkins was welcomed by the Fulham family. This must be a Fulham family I neither know nor understand. Our Fulham family remember a Chelsea legend replacing  a Fulham one in Micky Adams. Wilkins failed to get [...]

The Tanner Report

I was not at the F A Cup  game at Norwich so I cannot offer a first hand opinion. My wife, proof-reading my copy, said ” that’s never stopped you.” There were three important features: the return of Clint Dempsey, who my reporters said looked rusty; a great save by David [...]

The Tanner Report

In a game where result and points were all, I was nonetheless pleased that we stuck to our passing game and traditional footballing values, unlike West Ham. Passing was all the more difficult in gusty conditions and if I had a criticism – was this the early Ray Wilkins influence?- we were [...]
