About Alan Tanner

After a distinguished military service in the Catering Corps, Alan Tanner did well in mufti with his chamois as a window cleaner. Sadly he had to retire after falling from the fifth floor of Danny Murphy's mock Tudor home. He spends his retirement watching and writing about his beloved Fulham whom he has supported for over 50 years. The Alan Tanner Report is sponsored by Tanner Crystal Clear Ltd, Window Cleaners to the Gentry. More Posts

A visit to the Amex stadium

I had already booked a stadium tour of the Amex stadium, the home of Brighton and Hove Albion. No – I have not deserted my beloved Fulham after 50 years but, now having a property nearby, they are my local side. If you take season tickets as the measuring stick, Brighton are the seventh [...]

Brede goes public

Fulham legend Brede Hangeland criticised Felix Magath and the club in an interview on Sky Sports, over his notification by email to go and the stern style of the manager. Reading the Fulham Independent forum, opinion is divided. On one hand, fans say that at 33 he was over the hill and did [...]

For Cottage and Country

In the fifty-odd years I have followed Fulham I cannot recall a game in which two of our sons were skippers facing each other in a World Cup game, as happened last night when Bryan Ruiz’s Costa Rica put out Karagounis’ Greece. Before I get a comment, I am talking tournament stage as [...]

The Tanner Report

I was in my local butchers, deciding whether it would be a Porterhouse or rib eye steak, and chewing the cud with Colin there. We laughed about the latest excuse: the selling of the playing fields. Of course we all know that the favelas are replete with fine pitches and sports pavilions. He said [...]

Fixtures list

The fact that we are in a different division after 13 years does not affect my excitement when the fixture list is published. I particularly looked out for Brentford and Brighton and we are playing both teams in late November. We always seem to play Norwich and beat them at the end of the season [...]

Brede adieu

The decision to terminate the services of Fulham club skipper Brede Hangeland has not gone down well with either Brede or the fans. It’s a sad reflection of where our club is now that someone who served the club for five years, was one of our best-ever defenders and club captain, should get [...]

Ray Lewington

There was an excellent interview in the Telegraph yesterday by Henry Winter of Ray Lewington. What a career he has had. It detailed his years as player and manager at Fulham, where times were so hard that his wife Ann had to wash the team kit. He is now the respected number two to Roy Hodgson. [...]

London derbies

I was disappointed that QPR won their play-off final and Leyton Orient lost theirs to deprive us of two entertaining derbies. The odd thing about QPR and Fulham is there is rarely parity between the fortunes of the two clubs. Thus in 1968-70 we had 2 relegations and QPR 2 promotions. In the last [...]

Peter Thomson

Peter Thomson passed away a few years ago and is much mourned and missed by the Fulham faithful. In many ways he resembled all that the club represented with his eccentricity, intelligence, whimsical books about the club and his steadfast support. He never pretended to be otherwise than a public [...]

The Tanner End of Term Report

There was a good article on www.hammyend.com which went beyond highlighting the appalling errors made this season to consider a faulty management structure. The great thing about Mohammed al Fayed was not just his love of the club and its supporters, but that he had a vision, not necessarily the [...]
