About Alan Tanner

After a distinguished military service in the Catering Corps, Alan Tanner did well in mufti with his chamois as a window cleaner. Sadly he had to retire after falling from the fifth floor of Danny Murphy's mock Tudor home. He spends his retirement watching and writing about his beloved Fulham whom he has supported for over 50 years. The Alan Tanner Report is sponsored by Tanner Crystal Clear Ltd, Window Cleaners to the Gentry. More Posts

The Tanner report: Fulham1 Brentford 4

One of the most annoying aspects of the Fulham meltdown is the way it is represented in the programme and website. The earliest Fulham programmes were edited by Merula who did not hold back in his criticism. Under the stewardship of Dennis Turner, up at 7-30 to edit the programme for 30 years [...]

The Tanner report: Sean Davis

Yesterday at a Fulham gathering I had the privilege of meeting Sean Davis. The word legend is over used but appropriate for Sean. He played 155 games for Fulham but the crucial feature of these was that they were in all 4 divisions, a rare feat.  The one we recall the best took place almost 15 [...]

Sporting memorabilia

I never much like receiving the red card from the postman of non-delivery of signed-for items. It involves a journey to the sorting office for bad news. So yesterday when I queued up in the cold I was less than happy. Little did I know. Readers will know that many of our sports Rusters love sports [...]

The Tanner Report

Without a win a month and a defeat once again to a top six team we are creeping ever closer to the relegation zone. Next week’s visit to Millwall is going to be crucial. Our real problem is one of defensive organisation. Both goals conceded in the first half were soft and Mick McCarthy knew [...]

The Tanner Report

Yesterday I had lunch at the Indigo restaurant at the Ardington Hotel in Worthing ,where I have a bungalow, with a local Fulham fan. Both Barry and I are old Fulham, our support started in the sixties. All his boys are supporters and I mentioned that on February 14 Jamie, Bob Tickler’s [...]

The Tanner Report

When a mid-to-lower championship side comes up against a mid-to-lower Premier side the difference in class is usually palpable and it was last night when Sunderland beat Fulham 3-1 to remove us from the FA Cup. The game turned on a grotesque error by Marcus Bettinelli, our keeper, whose transition [...]

The Tanner Report

Amongst the felling of Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs, cup giants all, our spirited draw at Sunderland has been rather overlooked yet it was a great achievement. One of the features of recent months is that we have tightened up in the defence. Kit Symons maintains the same defensive  unit [...]

The Tanner Report

I have already written now amazed and disturbed I am by the degree of fan dislike of Bryan Ruiz. Clearly a sensitive flower, it scarcely helps to raise his game if he has to  hear constant criticism from  his own fans. The transfer never really worked out and  joins the list of £10m plus [...]

The Tanner Report

The 400 Fulham faithful that braved sub-Arctic conditions to see us proceed into the next round of the cup will remember this one for many years. It rather reminded me of a cup game more than 20 years ago when in conditions so awful that, were the two teams not earning from a Sky game, it would [...]

The Tanner Report

We have not managed a goal in our last 4 games and are by no means secure with 28 points in 18th place. We do have a prolific scorer – 5 in 9 outings- but Matt Smith is striking for Bristol City on loan not us, Ryan Tunnicliffe was called back from Blackburn Rovers and did feature. One player [...]
